The first Boeing 747 was a wide-body jet airliner, not a full double-decker: its early design had a short raised upper-deck “hump” near the nose. To assemble an aircraft of this size, Boeing built a new factory beside Paine Field in Everett, Washington. The University of Washington’s account says the first 747 rolled out of its hangar on September 30, 1968, 28 months after Joe Sutter’s first sketches; the Project Management Institute gives a comparison suggesting this was 14 months faster than was typical for passenger aircraft at the time.
