A famous full-length portrait of Abraham Lincoln is a composite print, not an actual photograph of his whole body. Printer William Pate combined Lincoln’s head from an 1864 photograph by Anthony Berger with the body and background from an 1852 engraving of John C. Calhoun by A. H. Ritchie. The papers in the scene were relabeled: references to free trade were replaced with the Constitution, the Union, and a proclamation of freedom.
