Why height shrinks through the day
A person’s height does decrease slightly during the day and partly recovers after overnight rest. Under load, intervertebral discs lose some fluid and compress; while lying down, they take up fluid again. Small studies have found daily differences of roughly 1–2 cm, but the amount depends on the person, activity and measurement timing.
Daily height change reflects spinal-disc compression and recovery.
