Roads that connected the Roman Empire

Remains of Roman roads survive across many regions of the former empire. Their construction was not uniform: builders adapted to local materials and ground, often raising the roadbed, laying several layers, and adding ditches to carry water away. The network had important military purposes and also supported trade, officials, and communication between cities and provinces.
