The Perseverance rover landed on Mars in 2021, investigated rocks and collected samples for a possible future return to Earth. It also delivered the Ingenuity helicopter and MOXIE, an experiment that produced oxygen from carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere. NASA’s launch press kit estimated about $2.4 billion to build and launch the mission and another roughly $300 million for landing and prime operations. This was an initial estimate for defined phases, rather than the price of every future Mars mission.
