Some freshwater turtles can take up part of their oxygen from water through the cloaca, a shared rear chamber that opens beneath the tail. In species with well-developed cloacal bursae, water circulates through them and oxygen passes into the blood. This supplements lung breathing and helps them stay underwater longer; not all turtles use this method.
