Europe’s coastline length
The figure “38,000 km” is not a universal length for Europe’s coastline without a stated method. For an irregular shore, measured length changes with map scale and depends on whether islands, fjords, bays, and transcontinental territories are included. A European scientific study reports 48,600 km for its own dataset and method; other datasets yield substantially different results.
