Australians, Texans and Oceania’s sheep

Australia has fewer people than Texas: the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated 27,801,023 people at 31 December 2025, while the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Texas at 31,709,821 on 1 July 2025. The population reference dates are about six months apart.

Oceania has more sheep than people. Australia alone had 65.8 million sheep and lambs at 30 June 2025; New Zealand had 23.31 million sheep in June 2024. Together that is at least 89 million animals in two countries—well above the UN’s 2025 estimate of 46.61 million people for all Oceania. Livestock inventories and population estimates use different dates and definitions.
