Are babies born without kneecaps?

Not exactly. Newborns already have a patella, but it is largely cartilaginous and therefore does not appear bone-like on an ordinary X-ray. Its ossification center develops later: studies report a broad range of roughly 2–6 years, with average onset earlier in girls than boys. The bony structure develops during childhood, but the kneecap does not appear from nothing.

The patella is present from birth as cartilage; ossification comes later.
