A desert snail's long dormancy

Some desert land snails can survive drought in prolonged dormancy. The desert species *Sphincterochila zonata* is described as becoming active after rains, and the literature reports that such snails can withstand severe droughts for several years. This is not ordinary winter hibernation but aestivation—a slowed state during heat and lack of moisture; three years is not typical for all snails.

Some desert snails can survive multi-year drought in aestivation.
