Енн Бонні та Мері Рід: піратки XVIII століття
Anne Bonny and Mary Read are two of the best-known women associated with Caribbean piracy. But they were not seventeenth-century pirates: they were captured with John “Calico Jack” Rackham’s crew in 1720 and tried for piracy in Jamaica on November 28 that year. Both were convicted; their executions were postponed after they pleaded pregnancy.
Calling them “two of the best-known” is a fair description of their place in popular historical memory, but parts of their familiar story come from a 1724 book rather than only from contemporary records. Bonny’s later fate remains uncertain; Read died in prison.
