How flying fish take flight
Flying fish leap from the water and glide with enlarged pectoral fins spread; in “four-winged” species the pelvic fins are enlarged too. An underwater run-up helps them launch, and when a fish skims the surface again its tail may remain in the water and provide another boost. Glides of hundreds of metres have been reported for some species under favorable conditions, but this is not the typical distance of every leap.
