The popular line “Let them eat cake,” attributed to Marie Antoinette, has no reliable confirmation: Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote a similar remark before the future queen arrived in France and attributed it to an unnamed “great princess.” In 1793, the newspaper *Révolutions de Paris* reported that, while climbing the scaffold before her execution on October 16, Marie Antoinette accidentally stepped on the executioner’s foot and apologized: “I did not do it on purpose.” This is an early printed report of her words, not a verbatim transcript of the final moment.
