How many bees live in a hive?

The number depends on season and colony strength. A strong honey bee hive can contain tens of thousands of bees in summer: Oregon State University gives about 60,000–80,000, while other university extension services often give 20,000–60,000 for a healthy colony. 120,000 may occur in an exceptional colony, but it overstates the typical average range.
