Larry Page and Sergey Brin began working on BackRub at Stanford University in the mid-1990s, while they were students. The project was a search engine: it used the structure of links between web pages to estimate their importance. BackRub was later renamed Google. In 1998, the team moved from university dorm rooms to its first office, Susan Wojcicki’s garage in Menlo Park; the garage was an early Google office, not where BackRub was first created.
