Buddha means Awakened One and is a title rather than an ordinary family surname. The historical teacher Siddhartha Gautama is called Shakyamuni Buddha. Different Buddhist traditions also recognize other buddhas. The title and religious ideas of awakening should be distinguished from biologically waking from sleep.
