Do plants recognize neighbors?
Some plants respond to neighboring plants through light, chemical, or root-related cues. Studies have also found particular species changing growth depending on whether nearby plants were genetically related. But this is not a universal ability shared by all plants, and “recognition” does not imply human-like awareness. Results depend on species and conditions; the mechanisms and strength of these effects remain under discussion.
Some plants respond to neighbor cues; universal “recognition” is an overstatement.
