What remnant will a star leave?

Stars of roughly the Sun’s mass usually end their evolution as white dwarfs—hot, dense stellar cores that gradually cool. Much more massive stars can explode as supernovae and leave a neutron star or a black hole. Which remnant forms depends not only on initial mass, but also on the star’s evolution and the core mass after its outer layers are lost.
