Snow at the edge of the Sahara
Snow occasionally falls at the northern edge of the Sahara—for example, near the Algerian town of Aïn Séfra, which lies between the desert and the Atlas Mountains at roughly 1,000 m elevation. The rare event requires a combination of cold air and moisture. Snow may briefly cover dunes before melting. This does not mean that snow regularly falls in the remote central Sahara.
