The Tallest Trees: California Redwoods

The coast redwood (*Sequoia sempervirens*) is the tallest tree in the world: many exceed 100 meters, and famous individual trees reach about 115 meters. Its relative, the giant sequoia (*Sequoiadendron giganteum*), is generally shorter but has a more massive trunk; the General Sherman Tree is considered the largest by trunk volume. So “sequoia” can refer to two different species with different records.
