Oceanic Oxygen
Ocean phytoplankton, microscopic algae, and cyanobacteria generate roughly half of Earth’s gross photosynthetic oxygen production. This is an estimate of production, not the share of oxygen people directly breathe: much newly produced oxygen is consumed again through respiration and decomposition. The comparison depends on what is being measured and does not mean the ocean “supplies” half of our breathable air. [1–3]
Marine phytoplankton generate roughly half of gross photosynthetic oxygen.
