Antarctica: winds and elevation
Antarctica is the windiest continent and has the highest average surface elevation of any continent. The average is roughly 2,000–2,500 m, depending on method and treatment of the ice sheet; much of this elevation is ice rather than exposed rock. Strong coastal katabatic winds form as cold, dense air drains from the elevated ice plateau toward the coast.
The elevated ice plateau drives katabatic winds toward the coast.
