Volcanic Ash and Air Travel

In April 2010, an explosive phase of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull eruption sent ash into air currents that carried it south and east. Because volcanic ash can damage jet engines, authorities progressively closed large parts of European airspace; EUROCONTROL estimated that more than 100,000 flights were cancelled over a week. Ash can melt inside a hot engine and adhere to its components.
