In a study published in Nature in 2023, a brain–spine interface helped one man with a chronic incomplete cervical spinal cord injury control standing and walking. Implants recorded cortical signals, and the system converted them into electrical stimulation of spinal neural structures below the injury. It was an experimental digital bypass combined with rehabilitation, rather than a universal cure for paralysis. Describing it as “two chips” oversimplifies a multicomponent system.
